Dr. Kate Crawford is a Research Professor at USC Annenberg, a Senior Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research, and a leading scholar on the social, political, and environmental implications of artificial intelligence. She is the author of 'Atlas of AI: Power, Politics, and the Planetary Costs of Artificial Intelligence,' published by Yale University Press in 2021.

Crawford co-founded the AI Now Institute at New York University, one of the first academic research centers dedicated to studying the social implications of AI. Her research examines how AI systems are reshaping politics, labor markets, and the environment — going beyond technical analysis to investigate the human and ecological costs of AI infrastructure.

'Atlas of AI' traces the global supply chains of AI — from lithium mining in Nevada to data labeling in the Global South — revealing the hidden labor, environmental destruction, and power asymmetries embedded in AI systems. The book has been widely acclaimed and translated into multiple languages.

Crawford is a frequent advisor to governments and international organizations on AI policy and governance.
